Capstone Poster Outline

Title and introduction: Childhood obesity is an important issue because of the staggering proportions that this disease has reached in the past few years. Certain genetic factors paired with
changing lifestyles and culture has produced kids and adults who are generally not as
healthy as people were just a few decades ago. Widespread obesity has been the extreme
result of these changes. The percentage of children six to eleven years old in the United States who were obese increased from seven percent to nearly twenty percent from 1980 to 2008. Childhood obesity is a disorder where a child has too much unnecessary fat. It is sad that this is called a disorder or a disease because of the type of society we live in today. Many children who are overweight suffer from medical to self esteem issues. Some even suffer from psychological effects. There are so many ways for kids to prevent becoming obese and should do them.
Body paragraph 1:
Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases.
The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food and beverage industries and entertainment industries.
Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors.

Body paragraph 2: Being the target of prejudice can be devastating for overweight children. They are more likely to be sad, lonely, and nervous. One study found that children who were overweight rated their quality of life as being similar to children who were being treated for cancer.
And the effects can stick around. Being overweight during childhood can have lasting effects on self-esteem, body image, and economic mobility. Overweight children sometimes perceive themselves as unattractive, which may lead to depression, disordered eating, and risky behaviors such as tobacco and alcohol abuse.Even parents have been known to discriminate against their own overweight children. One study showed that parents of overweight daughters will not spend as much money on their daughters' college education as parents of normal-weight daughters.
Body paragraph 3: Due to increases in the prevalence of childhood obesity, today's children may not live as long as their parents. The study suggests that weight problems could cancel out life-extending benefits of medical advances in the coming decades. As a direct result, the united states could be facing its first sustained drop in life expectancy in the modern era.

Conclusion: Involving youth in both physical education as well as extracurricular sports programs is associated with increased academic success, as well as psychological and physical well being. Educators and parents alike must set the example and offer appropriate, safe programs that encourage all children, regardless of ability.  The opportunity to strive towards a healthy future that includes exercise as part of the normal, daily routine will then be anticipated with ongoing enthusiasm amongst today’s youth.
